The rain was driven by hard winds as we made our way up the west coast through County Clare to visit the Cliffs of Moher.<\/p>\n<p>The Cliffs of Moher are Ireland\u2019s most visited natural attraction. They stretch for 8km along the Atlantic coast of County Clare and reach 214m at their highest point at Knockardakin just north of O&#8217;Briens Tower.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_567\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-567\" style=\"width: 518px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-567\" src=\"https:\/\/worktime.dynalias.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Cliffs-of-Moher.jpg\" alt=\"Cliffs of Moher\" width=\"518\" height=\"345\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-567\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cliffs of Moher<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>O\u2019Brien\u2019s Tower was built in 1835 by Cornelius O\u2019Brien, the then landowner and a man ahead of his time, believing that the development of tourism would benefit the local economy and bring the people out of poverty.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_568\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-568\" style=\"width: 518px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-568 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/worktime.dynalias.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/O\u2019Brien\u2019s-Tower.jpg\" alt=\"O\u2019Brien\u2019s Tower (top left, viewing platform and steps is middle right)\" width=\"518\" height=\"345\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-568\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">O\u2019Brien\u2019s Tower (top left, viewing platform and steps is middle right)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>At the southern end of the cliffs stands Hags Head, a natural rocky promontory that resembles a seated woman when viewed from the north. In the ancient Gaelic language, the word Mothar means \u201cruined fort\u201d and a 1st century BC fort stood where Moher tower now stands.<\/p>\n<p>The top right hand corner of this image is partly obscured by the palm of my hand trying to keep the rain off the camera lens &#8211; doh!<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_570\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-570\" style=\"width: 518px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-570\" src=\"https:\/\/worktime.dynalias.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/The-Stack-ii.jpg\" alt=\"The Stack (ii)\" width=\"518\" height=\"345\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-570\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Stack (ii)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The visitor <span data-dobid=\"hdw\">interpretative<\/span> centre has been cleverly camouflaged into the side of the hill. Photographs inside showed that the hillside was excavated for construction then back-filled to bury the structure.
